Ways to get rid of garlic breath

Garlic is delicious and an integral ingredient in many dishes. However, the negative side-effect – garlic breath – makes one doubt whether it is really worth eating it. It is a sort of a turn-off, and it can last as long as 72 hours! We can suggest a number of effective ways to deal with garlic breath.

1. Eat some mustard
Mustard contains turmeric which helps to prevent and get rid of bad breath.

2. Take breath mints
It will ward off garlic breath for a while. Take some strong-flavoured mints or a gum.

3. Chew some parsley
Parsley is excellent for neutralizing garlic breath. It contains chlorophyll that works as a natural breath freshener. Make sure to eat fresh parsley as dried herbs do not contain active chlorophyll.

4. Use cardamom, fennel, anise and clove seeds
These herbs and seeds can help to neutralize or cover up garlic breath. In some restaurants dishes containing garlic are served with some of these seeds, especially fennel, as an after-meal snack.

5. Drink milk
Drink fat milk. The fat content of milk aids in reducing garlic breath.

6. Eat yoghurt
Eating yoghurt can help in reducing the number of malignant bacteria in the mouth, which are responsible for bad breath, including garlic breath.

7. Chew coffee beans
Coffee beans contain elements that have antibacterial effect, fighting microorganisms responsible for bad breath. Chewing roasted coffee beans can therefore be very useful when trying to get rid of garlic breath.

8. Eat cold foods
Garlic breath gets more intense when you eat hot foods. So after consuming garlic you should eat cold foods instead, like ice-cream or other frozen desserts or snacks.

9. Try fresh lemon
Lemon is very effective odour neutralizer. It has the capacity to kill bacteria causing bad breath. Try drinking freshly squeezed lemon juice after eating garlic.

10. Have a cup of green or mint tea
Green tea and mint tea contain polyphenols that help in reducing intensity of garlic odour. Drinking a cup of mint or green tea amid or after meal will reduce persistent garlic breath.

11. Use oral care products
Use toothpaste with fluoride and brush your teeth immediately after eating garlic, in order to get rid of the garlic breath. You can also use a mouth wash.
